How do you build your own solar panel system?

Want to generate electricity from the sun? How to select the parameters of each part of the solar power system? How much solar do I need? This article will teach you step by step how to estimate, with examples.

How Much Solar Do I Need

Want to generate electricity with a solar system? How many solar panels do I need? How to match the products of the system? These are common questions from solar homeowners. Deciding on the parameters of your home solar system starts with knowing what your goals are. How to maximize ROI, save money and reduce environmental impact.

What are the factors to be considered while designing a solar panel?

Step 1: Calculate Power Consumption

Usually there are two methods:

1. To count electrical appliances that require electricity, such as refrigerators, televisions, computers, etc., it is necessary to know the average usage time and total power.

2. Directly view past electricity bills and calculate average energy demand. Since energy usage varies widely from month to month, it's a good idea to scoop up your monthly electricity bills for the past year, add them up and divide by 12.

It should be noted that the electricity consumption in summer and winter is large, requiring air conditioning and heating equipment.

Step 2: Know the Weather and Solar Radiation

The most important factor affecting solar power generation is solar energy.

If you're in an area with rain, snow, sandstorms, and very little sunlight, even the best system won't be able to generate electricity.

It is necessary to understand the local solar radiation situation.

In case of cloudy and rainy days but no sunny days, the number of days of power supply should be added to the calculation.

Step 3: Calculate Solar System Component Parameters

Now that we know the electricity usage and sunshine hours, we can roughly estimate the parameters of the off-grid solar system components using the following formulas.

How do you measure solar panel parameters?

1. Total electricity consumption in a day: 1. Calculate the total electricity consumption of electrical appliances 2. Electricity bill

2. The number of batteries = the total power of the day - power consumption / (battery capacity * system voltage)

(Note: If you need to reserve a few days of power for rainy days, you can multiply the total power consumption by the number of days)

3. Total power of solar panels = total daily power consumption / (sun radiation * connection loss)

4. Number of solar panels = total power of solar panels / power of each solar panel

(Note: The connection loss is generally 0.8)

5. Inverter power = total electrical power *2~3

(Note: *2~3 consider load type)

6. Solar charge controller current = total power of solar panels / (system * controller efficiency)

(Note: 1.2 is the efficiency of PWM solar charge controller, 1.3 is the efficiency of MPPT solar charge controller)

For example:

Sunshine time: 6h System voltage: 24V

I need electricity for 2 days on a rainy day

TV 200W 2h

Computer: 300W 2h

Rice cooker: 1000W 1h

Air conditioner: 2000W 2h

Total power consumption per day=200W*2+300W*2+1000W+2000W=6000W

Battery quantity=6000W*2/(250Ah*24V)=2

Battery specification: 250Ah 2pcs

Total power of solar panels=6000W/(6h*0.8)=1250W

Number of solar panels=1250W/200W=6.25

Solar panel specification: 200W 6pcs~8pcs

Inverter power=(200W+300W+1000W+2000W)*2=7000W

Inverter specification: 7000W 24V

Solar charge controller current=1250W/(24V*1.3)=40A

Solar Charge Controller Specifications: MPPT 40A 24V
