A solar inverter without battery is one of the most crucial parts of a solar power system. A solar inverter converts the energy output by your solar panels into a usable form of electricity, for your home or workplace.

 

How does a solar inverter work?

A solar inverter works by taking a variable direct current, or 'DC' output, from a solar panel and converting it into alternating 120V/240V current, or 'AC' output. The appliances in your home run on AC instead of DC, which is why a solar inverter must change the DC output collected by the solar panels. Usually a 3kw solar inverter can meet the needs of most families. It can load basic home appliances, such as TV, lights, fridge, micro oven, etc,.

 

More technically, the sun shines down on your solar panels (or photovoltaic (PV) cells), which are made of semiconductor layers of crystalline silicon or gallium arsenide. These layers are a combination of positive and negative layers, which are connected by junctions. When the sun shines, the semiconductor layers absorb the light and transfer the energy to the PV cell. This energy runs around and jolting electrons away as they move between the positive and negative layers, creating an electric current known as direct current (DC). Once this energy is generated, it is either stored in a battery for later use or sent directly to an inverter ( depending on the type of system you have).

 

When the energy is sent to the inverter, it is DC, but your home requires AC. The inverter takes energy and runs it through a transformer, then outputs AC. Essentially, the inverter “tricks” the transformer into thinking that the DC is actually AC by forcing the transformer to behave like AC – the inverter runs the DC through two or more transistors that turn on and off ultra-fast close and feed two different sides of the transformer.
